More than 100 people including Workington MP Sue Hayman and Labour peer Lord Judd turned out in pouring rain in Cockermouth to pay their respects to Jo Cox MP following her killing last week.

Yesterday evening's vigil was organised by Cockermouth friends Sophia Atcha and Lizzie Kelley and held next to Memorial Gardens, off Wakefield Road.

Sophia, of Kirkgate, said: "We felt helpless as we walked around our town and saw grief stricken people in despair so I thought it could be a good idea to bring people together.

"Although it poured with rain I'd say about 120 people of all ages attended to pay their respects."

Church leaders, Lady Judd and a range of people also took part.

Sophia had announced her plan at a quiz in the town's Kirkgate Centre on Friday.

She then created an event on Facebook.

She said: "My friend Toby Gaffney read a lovely poem, then MP Sue Hayman, who was a personal friend of Jo's, spoke about Jo, then lead us into a one-minute silence.

"We closed with Lord Judd saying some poignant words about humanity. We had messages and texts from others who couldn't make it.

"People were so keen to support the vigil. Sainsbury's gave us flowers, Wilko gave us candles, the police were brilliant at helping us come up with a venue.

"The whole thing was simple, peaceful and lovely."
