A team of fifty volunteers turned out to help a West Cumbrian rugby club get a makeover.

Cockermouth Rugby Union Football Club, which manages the Grasmoor Centre, launched a crowdfunding appeal earlier this year to turn the club into an activity and social hub.

Volunteers gathered at the centre at the weekend for a two-day mission to spruce-up the facilities.

Chris Wright, head coach and committee member, said: "We had an excellent turnout, we had people of all ages and the youngest volunteer was a 7-year-old little girl. I won't say how old the oldest one was, but he was quite a bit older.

"We managed to get quite a lot done, all the external walls have been painted, which hadn't been done for 15 years and the bar and the changing rooms have now been painted.

"We did a total repair job, we had some some ceilings that needed filling and that's been done too."

The club, which is used for a range of sporting and social activities, including tennis, archery, cheerleading and ballroom dancing, initially set a target of £3,500.

But after hitting the target it raised it to £10,000.

Chris said: "We did say that if we reached the target we would use the rest of the money to create a multi-use games area on the existing tennis court, so that's what it's going towards."

Another project, which is due to be completed in the coming weeks, is a gazebo and barbecue area.

Chris said he was very grateful to all the the volunteers and supporters.

Sean Cusack, of the Castle Bar, helped with the bar upgrade, Wilkinsons donated £20-worth of materials, Paul Greening and Paul Wren provided materials for improving the car Park and other donations and support came also from JK Atkinsons and John McDowell.

The club has also recently installed an outdoor gym facility.

The clean-up event was held to coincide with NatWest's Rugby Force 2017, a community initiative run in partnership between NatWest and England Rugby aiming to help clubs across the country attract new members and to become stronger and more sustainable businesses.
