Two walkers were rescued in West Cumbria after they became lost in thick cloud and fog near Buttermere.
They became disorientated and descended steep ground towards Warnscale Bottom instead of the usual Scarth Gap route.
One of the walkers slipped and fell 12ft to 14ft, injuring their head and suffering a suspected broken forearm.
Members of Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team were called out.
The team reported the call-out on its Facebook page.
A spokesman said: "The injured man made a determined, valiant attempt at self-rescue, getting around halfway down before needing to stop due to his injuries, the cold and some awkward, loose ground.
"His companion continued the descent over difficult terrain and raised the alarm. He was evacuated by stretcher to a waiting land ambulance."
Members of the mountain rescue team were out for three hours.
