People will have the chance to see the £44,000-worth of improvements to the Crosscanonby Community Centre during the village's Easter fair this weekend.

Improvements include a new enlarged kitchen with double oven and range, dishwasher, more cupboard space and new crockery.

Laura Morgan, chairwoman of the community centre committee, said it was now up to a standard where it can comfortably cater for events such as weddings, christenings and funerals for up to 80 people.

All toilets have been refurbished. The disability toilet is more wheelchair accessible and both the male and female toilets have baby changing facilities.

A large room in the back is being transformed into a community library.

She said: "The mobile library has stopped coming so we are starting this one here. We will eventually have another door and another window in the room to increase the light.

"We also intend to replace a large table and chairs with a sofa and comfortable chairs to create a space where people can sit and read."

The next stage of work will be rendering and  painting the outside of the building.

This weekend, as well as the fair, the committee is holding an open day and encouraging people to come and see the centre.

The Easter fair will run from 11am to 4pm tomorrow.

Activities will include competitions for best decorated and bonnets, an egg dump, buns to decorate, stalls and refreshments.
