A Seaton teenager raised almost £600 in memory of her grandmother who died last month.

Rhianna Benson, 15, raised the cash for Cancer Research UK in memory of Elizabeth Benson, 74, of Workington, who died of cancer.

The St Joseph's school pupil was very close to her grandmother.

She said: "I think she would be proud of me. I'm happy to have raised this money, not everyone is going to have to suffer, people can survive cancer.

"I always used to go to town with my gran and she used to take me for a Subway.

"She always used to come to Blackpool with us for weekends away."

Rhianna managed to raise £580 in two hours thanks to a coffee afternoon she organised at Workington's Railway Club, with a raffle and a game of bingo, her grandmother's favourite game.

Her mum Lisa said: "I'm very proud of her. I think it's her way of dealing with the grief.

"Organising this event has also given her a bit of confidence.

"Her gran was the kind of person who would do anything for anybody. She was a big family person.

"She loved a game of bingo. Her nickname was Bingo Betty.

"She was always the first on the dancefloor. She was the life and soul of the party."

Rhianna added: "I was really surprised when I counted the money.

"I didn't expect to raise so much, I thought I would get about £200.

"Around 30 people came and Subway donated some cookies. My gran used to go there every morning and they got in touch saying they wanted to help."

Rhianna, who is a keen cheerleader, said she wants to organise fundraising events in her grandmother's memory every year.
