A Workington couple have revealed how they are still very much in love as they celebrate 60 years of marriage.

Harry Jones, 84, and wife Ruth, 81, of Ashmore Gardens, tied the knot at St Michael's Church in 1955 having met three years earlier.

Today is 60 years to the day that the couple married and they will spend time with family at the weekend as they look back at their life together.

Mrs Jones said: "We met many years ago at a dance hall. Every month they used to have a gathering in the recreation room and Harry's sister worked in the same hospital I was working at.

"After my training I was homesick and went back to Workington, but he agreed to come here despite the fact he had no job and nowhere to live."

The couple have lived in the town all their married life and eventually found a flat to live in before moving to their first house on Wesley Street.

Ruth trained as a nurse and went on to work at West Cumberland Hospital for 29 years before taking early retirement at 55.

Harry worked as a motor mechanic, an engineer for a washing machine company and in the jam factory at Maryport.

He said: "We've had a very happy marriage. We've travelled all around but the furthest we've been was America and my best memory was looking over the Grand Canyon.

"We've had our quarrels and our differences, but we never went to bed on a row. We're still very much in love."

Mr and Mrs Jones have three children in Glyn, Debbie and Judith, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Ruth is now Harry's full-time carer, but despite his ill health they say they've had many memorable times.

Mrs Jones added: "Some of the highlights have been the family all getting married and having children and grandchildren. We've had a full family life and we've had a good life.

"We have our own interests. I sometimes go to Goodison Park to watch Everton, but we always find common ground.

"The secret is give and take. We discuss things and always reach a compromise."
