Flood risks in and around Workington are set to be assessed in the coming weeks in the latest step towards protecting homes and businesses.

The Environment Agency study, scheduled to be completed by the end of April, is among actions recommended in a report into the 2015 floods.

Other planned steps include reviewing whether lake levels could be managed differently to reduce flood risk downstream along the River Derwent, and reviewing the accuracy of forecasting for the area.

A flood forum meeting will be held on Tuesday to present a finalised report into the the impact of Storm Desmond in and around the town.

Residents will have the chance to quiz experts from the Environment Agency and county council.

It follows a meeting in June, when a draft report was presented, during which residents said the town needed urgent flood defence solutions to protect homes from further floods.

Work has now been done to repair flood defences damaged during Storm Desmond, and gravel has been removed from the river by the Environment Agency and Workington Flood Action Group.

Drainage and sewerage systems are still being assessed to see what improvements could be made to reduce surface water flooding.

Chris Evans, Environment Agency flood risk advisor, said at June's meeting that repairing existing flood defences would provide a starting point for improvements.

He added that work was already under way to assess what changes were needed and draw up recommendations, with money sought from the Government to carry out work.

In the autumn Workington Flood Action Group launched a campaign to raise £30,000 for flood defences after the town missed out on Government funding.

Twenty eight homes in the Hall Park View area were flooded when Storm Desmond hit, along with the police station, cricket club and bowling club.

Ten were also flooded, as did Camerton Hall.

The draft flood action report covered Workington and Barepot. Following concerns raised at the last meeting that Camerton had been overlooked, the village has been included in the finalised report.

The meeting takes place at the Bridge Centre, Central Square, from 6pm to 8pm.
