Workington Comets speedway rider Kenneth Hansen has swapped breakneck speed for pedal power with a 145-mile charity bike ride this week.

Kenneth and five other people, including Comets co-promoter Steve Whitehead and Maryport wheelchair racer Simon Lawson, set off on the cycle challenge from the Zebra Claims Stadium to Tynemouth Castle and Priory today.

The six cyclists will ride from Workington to Carlisle today, Carlisle to Hexham tomorrow and Hexham to the finish line at Tynemouth Castle on Wednesday.

They are raising funds for Testicular Cancer Awareness, in conjunction with Hansen’s Speedway Riders Have Balls campaign.

The 27-year-old Dane suffered a cancer scare in March after being told by doctors he had suspected testicular cancer.

Further tests the next day in a private hospital in Denmark revealed he had a non-cancerous cyst, but Hansen’s 24 hours on tenterhooks inspired him to start his Speedway Riders Have Balls campaign.

His page on social media website Facebook has more than 2,000 “likes” and he hopes to make more people aware of the symptoms of testicular cancer and to check for signs regularly.
