This is your chance to follow in my unsteady footsteps.

I know the two of you who read this column have secretly wanted to have a go at running but have never had the nerve to get those trainers out. Now is that time.

My running club, BodyFit, is launching a beginners class next week and there are spaces available. Not only that but tomorrow there are free taster sessions in Cockermouth, where I will be taking a starring role.

I say a starring role. I’ll actually be in my usual position at the back of the group.

The 30-minute sessions will start from the Lakes Home Centre on Low Road. The first is for beginners – no experience is needed at all for this. If you’ve never run for a bus before, this is for you.

The second session is for people who can run a little and want to know how to improve or are just after some top tips. It’s been organised with BodyFit and my lovely colleagues at Go Active. If you like it, you can sign up for the 10-week course.

I’ll be on hand to look beastly in Lycra, sweat a lot and shout at Sam, who runs BodyFit, on your behalf. There may even be time for tea and cake afterwards in the cafe.

You can ask me running questions. I won’t know the answers, but I’ll try to make you laugh. If you’re looking at all the Christmas stuff in the shops and panicking about your Christmas party, thinking ‘Yikes! I’m never going to fit into the festive party dress I bought last year,’ this is the course for you.

Since I started I have dropped a shedload of weight and continue to do so. So much so that Sarah, a running friend I haven’t seen for a while asked me on Saturday where my other half was.

She didn’t mean the husband, she meant the other half of me! So it’s well worth giving it a go. I will warn you though, there are peaks and troughs with this activity.

I am currently in a trough as I’m still recovering from my chest infection.

This term we are focussing on arm drive. The theory is the more you work your arms, the faster/harder your legs will work.

Don’t quote me on this though, I kind of zoned out a bit at the class. Lovely coach Tony was with Sam on Monday and we were doing a pyramid session, looking at arm drive.

We were working at various speeds for runs of between four minutes (giving it eight out of 10 effort) and a 30 seconds (10 out 10 effort) with between two minutes and a minute of recovery.

It was hard work and I learnt a valuable lesson as well.

You can’t run at that effort if all you’ve eaten from Saturday is a bowl of porridge and four pots of strawberry jelly.

Short story is I lost a bit of my tooth on Friday night and managed to cut my tongue to ribbons, so solid food was a no-no.

I think I nearly passed out twice, but wanted to keep going to get praise from Sam, It’s really pathetic, I know.

Am also now doubly sure that Tony thinks I’m a first class whinger/hypochondriac.

Every time he’s taken a class, I’ve not been quite right and lumbered along at the back or walked (only when Sam’s not been there. I’m too terrified to walk when she can see you).

That is my own paranoia at play as he’s far too nice for that.

See? If the coaches can put up with me, they can certainly put up with you.

See you tomorrow!
