Bruno Mars congratulates flash mob proposal pair

Singer Bruno Mars has congratulated a Seaton couple who got engaged while using one of his songs in New York’s Central Park.

Peter O’Donnell, 31, of Main Road, shocked girlfriend Siobhan Byrne, 26, by getting up and joining in a seemingly random dance routine to Bruno’s hit Marry You on January 3.

But Peter had arranged the flash mob routine before the couple arrived in the USA and had been secretly learning the routine for weeks.

Performance company Flash Mob America helped to organise 100 dancers to be at the park’s Bethesda Fountain, where Peter’s proposal was caught on camera.

It was recorded and uploaded online, where it has become one of the most watched videos – see it below.

Bruno told his 6.67 million followers on Twitter: “Awwww, congrats to Peter and Siobhan”.

The star’s message prompted thousands more people to search out the video online.

Peter, a dental technician at Seaton’s Alpha Denture Clinic, said he wanted to do something different and couldn’t think of anything else that would suit Siobhan.

Siobhan, a lifeguard at Center Parcs, near Penrith, said: “It was unbelievable. Amazing. I never expected it. He doesn’t like being the centre of attention, so that made it extra special.”

Peter and Siobhan hope to marry in the summer next year and plan to hold a local ceremony.

Prompted by Peter’s unusual proposal, we asked our readers and users of our social networking website Facebook what was the most romantic thing anyone had done for them.

Ailsa Sharp posted: “He bought me earrings and hid them in popcorn at the cinema.”

Katie Gentry posted: “He drew pictures of me while I slept. Saying it now, it sounds a bit creepy, but it was romantic. I woke up surrounded by really lovely sketches as he was still drawing.

Yvonne Walker posted: “My partner for my birthday made me a treasure hunt around the house with clues on home made cards to find my presents, the last one being an engagement ring. Needless to say, I said yes!”

Tell us what the most romantic thing anyone has done for you below!

I proposed to my partner at the the end of totality during a total eclipse of the sun, just as the sun peeked out from behind the moon and created a diamond ring in the sky. I gave her a white and yellow gold diamond ring and she dissolved into tears, not the response I anticipated! However, it was not bad for an unromantic geezer like me!
