Children's charity to benefit from Cockermouth mums' fund-raising event

Three Cockermouth mums are holding a women’s makeover event to raise money for cancer charities.
Sarah Foster, of Towers Lane, Ali Millne, of South Street, and Patty Williams, of the Mount, Papcastle, have organised the How to Look Good Dressed night and hope to raise £1,000 for Geoff Brown’s Walk for Wishes.
The charity raises funds to help sick children and it allowed Brigham girl Naomi Bernard, six, to go to Disneyland last June before she died from a rare cancer.
The walk will set off from Rosthwaite near Keswick on July 12 and reach Carlisle on July 14.
It will also raise cash for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
The women’s children all go to St Joseph’s School, where Naomi was also a pupil.
Sarah said: “We knew Naomi and her parents and thought we had to raise money for the Geoff Brown Walk for Wishes.
“It is a very worthwhile charity because of the support it gives to children who are going through this treatment.
“We want to raise as much money as possible because if it helps another child with their wish it is all good.”
It is hoped that more than 100 women will attend the event, at the Hundith Hill Hotel, near Cockermouth, on May 25.
They were inspired to organise it by stylist Gok Wan’s TV shows.
Sarah said: “Most women are fans of Gok Wan so one of the key things we want from the event is show women how to style.”
Ali added: “We have had a really good response and people have been really supportive of the event.”
As well as getting style advice, women will be able to sell their unwanted clothes with 50 per cent of the sale going to the charity.
Businesses that have supported the event include Mark Antony Hairdressers, Fat Face, make-up artist Sophia Atcha, Riff Raff, Desire and Dawn Smart, Colour Me Beautiful consultant.
