Cockermouth woman Sarah Edgar’s decision to take part in this summer’s Race for Life has added poignancy following the death of her father.
Sarah, 20, of Windmill Lane, had already signed up to take part in the fund-raising event for Cancer Research UK at Cartmel racecourse.
She will now run in memory of Joseph, 61, who died of throat cancer on April 10.
Sarah said: “I wanted to do it before my dad died to raise awareness but now that he has passed away I want to do it even more.
“It will be a fitting tribute and a way of saying thank you for all the help he got from Hospice at Home, district nurses and the local doctors.”
Sarah will take part in the 5k women-only race on July 1 with friend Danielle Murdy, 22, of The Ghyll, Maryport, and hopes to raise £300.
Sarah returned to work as a support worker at West House in Wigton last week after taking three weeks off following her father’s death.
She said: “My dad was very outgoing and would do anything for our family. It was very hard to see him go through it.”
