Dancing queens on stage

Maryport's 31st annual dance festival got under way on Wednesday, with nearly 120 entries.
The dancers have travelled from all over West Cumbria and from as far away as Sunderland, South Shields, St Helens and Lancaster for the competition, which ends tomorrow.
The festival is being held at the town’s Wave Centre.
The adjudicator this year is a former British junior ballet champion, Joanne Kirkland, of Leeds who is a lecturer, examiner and professional coach with diplomas in ballet, tap, modern jazz, theatrecraft, freestyle dance, gym, cheerleading and dance exercise.
The Queen of the Solway Dance Festival would usually have been held last week but the date was changed so it did not clash with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Organiser Sandra Chapman said she was delighted with the turnout and it was running smoothly.
All sessions are open to the public and Saturday will give people the opportunity to see all the finalists dance for their places in the competition.
The programme includes ballet, tap, modern, song and dance, modern and national dance.
