Deaf Cumbrian athlete opens new club for the disabled

A deaf West Cumbrian athlete is hoping that her story will inspire disabled youngsters to take up sport.
The Clover Club will launch on February 25 after 27-year-old Bethan Lishman dreamed up the idea to get more disabled children participating in activities.
The club will run on Fridays during each school holiday.
The High Brigham hammer thrower has represented Great Britain at the Deaflympics and said there was not enough provision for disabled people in West Cumbria.
She added: “I have achieved a lot in my chosen sport and I want to be able to help others realise their goals.
“I am proud to have represented my country on the international stage and I believe that with help and guidance, others could also have a bright future in sport.
“I want disabled people to know that just because they suffer from something does not mean they can’t be successful.
“It’s hard. I know when I was growing up there wasn’t anything like this for me. I had to do it on my own so now I feel it’s my right to try and encourage others.”
It will be launched at Workington Leisure Centre at Moorclose, with a number of activities being put on.
A group of wheelchair basketball players and rugby players will come from Carlisle to demonstrate their skills.
Bethan will be giving classes in athletics and boccia and other classes including exercise to music, indoor curling and taster sessions in the swimming pool will also be available.
Bethan said: “The club will also give parents a much-needed rest. It may only be for an hour or so but those hours are important.
“I know it can be tiring looking after children with disabilities so we are also offering parents the chance to take part in yoga sessions.”
Sessions will cost £1.50 and will run from 9am until 12noon.
