Exit stage left as Katie heads off to New York

A Cockermouth School sixth former has been accepted into the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York.

Katie Rusman, of Main Street, Great Broughton, will join the academy next summer to study musical theatre.

She has been awarded a £3,500 scholarship per year for the two-year course, which costs £30,000 a year.

Katie, 18, will take a year out to work and hold fund-raising events to raise the rest of the money.

She has been part of the Rosehill Youth Theatre group since she was eight years old and has starred in its productions of the Wizard of Oz, Oliver! and The Sound of Music.

She is part of the Staged Right theatre production company and youth theatre, based in Carlisle, and is also the singer in a band Lollipop, which performs at charity gigs around West Cumbria.

“It will be my first time away from home but I’m very excited and my family and friends have been so supportive,” she said.

“I went to New York in October last year and loved it so much, and I’d heard the academy had a great reputation and had taught stars such as singer Jason Derülo, so I decided to apply.

“In the future I really hope to star on Broadway or in the West End.”

Have your say

Wishing you all the best Katie, good for you!
