A group of Maryport’s heroes were not put off by rain or a technical hitch at the premiere of a film about their community.

WE’RE ALL HEROES: Promoting the film Calling All The Heroes at Ewanrigg, in Maryport

Calling All The Heroes, starring people from the Ewanrigg estate, was commissioned by Big Local, a lottery project that has granted the Ewanrigg estate £1m to be spent on community improvements over 10 years.

The film takes its name from a 1986 hit, written in Maryport, by West Cumbrian rock band It Bites.

Ian Douglas, storyteller and community theatre specialist, said: “Calling All The Heroes aims to tell local people about the Big Local programme, get people more involved in the life of the community and set them thinking about what they want for their area.”

The film was made in partnership with Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake, with funding from Arts Council England. It was due to be premiered at the estate’s community centre but the film projector did not work.

So, instead of a cinema experience, people took shifts to watch the film on a laptop computer.

Children earlier paraded around the estate in the rain to raise awareness of the Big Local and the need for participation.

Nothing has yet been decided about where the cash will be spent.

Allison Gilchrist, consultant, said the community would drive the spending of the Big Local lottery money.
