Maryport dinner and talks mark end of Titanic commemorations

Maryport's Titanic commemorations ended on a high with a weekend of events.

Friday saw the second of two dinners based on the first class menu on the Titanic.

The meal, cooked and served by students of Lillyhall’s Lakes College, was fully booked and fully enjoyed by all those present.

Centre manager Vanessa Brown said the dinners had been such a success that regular themed dinners were being planned as part of a partnership between the venue and the college.

Whitehaven jewellery maker Emma Summerfield created a small and exclusive range of Titanic-themed jewellery which was auctioned off after the dinner.

Every item sold and more than £100, a percentage of the profits, was donated to the Maryport Maritime Museum.

Another highlight was a talk on Sunday by Dik Barton from Carlisle, the first Briton to dive to the Titanic wreck, and a talk by Cliff Ismay, who is related to Thomas Ismay, owner of the White Star Line.

Mr Barton, who was in charge of a collection of 6,500 artefacts recovered from the wreck, spoke about the moving discoveries he had made.

Among them were a satchel of intact perfume samples, which were being taken to the USA by a German perfumer, and some binoculars.

Mr Barton was working as a salvage operator in Hong Kong when he joined RMS Titanic Inc, which had exclusive rights to salvage the wreck.

He explained that nothing was taken from the ship itself and the only artefacts removed were those that were scattered within the wreck area and which could be removed without damage.

Mr Ismay, from Workington, spoke about the history of the Ismay family in Maryport and Thomas Ismay’s commitment to his childhood home, setting up charity funds which exist to this day.

He also defended Bruce Ismay, then chairman of the White Star Line, whose life was ruined after he survived the wreck when he was accused of cowardice.

Around 7,000 people viewed the Titanic exhibition which was organised by volunteers from Maryport Maritime Museum and which ran for seven weeks, closing on Sunday.
