Mother and daughter give birth a day apart

A Workington woman who suffered three miscarriages gave birth to her sixth child – and then became a grandmother within 24 hours.

SHARING THE BABY JOY: Andrea Rafferty, left, from Northside, with partner Russ Mason and new baby Aleisha, gave birth just one day before her daughter Amber, right, had her baby son Jacob, with partner Anthony Blacklock

Andrea Rafferty, 43, of Mitchell Avenue, Northside, gave birth to Aleisha Rose Mason at the West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven, on Friday.

Weighing 9lb, Aleisha’s name is a loose anagram tribute to Andrea’s mum Sheila Bode, who died in 1994.

Andrea suffered two miscarriages at home in 2011 and one last year. She found out last October she was pregnant with Aleisha.

Andrea said: “She really is a miracle baby. The doctors had no answer as to why I had the miscarriages before her.

“I really thought I wouldn’t have another child and that my age was against me but she was the easiest pregnancy I have had. She’s so precious, we all love her to bits.”

The family’s joy was doubled when Andrea’s daughter Amber Moore, 19, gave birth to Andrea’s first grandchild the day after Aleisha was born.

Andrea, whose partner is Russ Mason, 28, of Queen’s Avenue, Seaton, said: “The doctors said this was the first time the hospital had seen a mother and daughter having babies within a day of each other.

“We had beds next to each other so it was nice to be able to recover together.”

Jacob Anthony Andrew Blacklock was born five weeks early on Saturday, weighing 5lb 13oz.

He will spend the next few weeks in the hospital’s special care baby unit.

Amber’s partner Anthony Blacklock, 21, of Westfield, was at the birth along with Andrea.

Andrea said: “We’re all looking forward to Jacob coming home soon.”

Andrea’s other children are Jamie, 23, Dean, 21, Kieran, 15, and Jackson, 13.
