More than 60 people attended an afternoon of jazz and swing at the Kirkgate Centre in Cockermouth last Thursday, in the latest in a series of events aimed at the over-60s.

The series, organised by Arts and Allsorts, have featured film, theatre, music and other activities with refreshments laid on.

The idea is to provide entertainment and social events for older people, particularly those who feel isolated and unwilling to go out in the evenings.

Jazz band Swing Thing performed.

Janet Sheppard, 71, of St Helen’s Street, said: “We came for the music and dancing and thoroughly enjoyed it. The last event was wonderful and we will be coming back.”

David Holt, 66, of Dale View, Cockermouth, said: “I enjoy most sorts of music and I have been coming since the start.”

Gilli Goodfellow, community engagement officer at the Kirkgate, and charity Age UK has organised the over-60s events.

She said: “We want to encourage more people to come along.”

Future events include a fascinator hat workshop on April 19 and the film Ladies in Lavender on May 17.
