The wife and daughter of a Cockermouth haulier who died in November will take part in a charity race in his memory.

Colin Lawson, 46, a director of Lawson’s Haulage, was diagnosed with throat cancer in April 2010.

After treatment he began to feel better, but last April received the devastating news that the cancer had returned and was terminal.

His wife Sian, 42, and their daughter Emilie, 14, of Millfield Park, have decided to take part in the 5km Race for Life in Carlisle next week.

Mrs Lawson said: “We want to raise money to help try to prevent cancer so another family will not have to go through the two years of hell we have.

“We are getting by. Emilie is keeping us together and we are just working through it.

“We have managed to keep going but every day is different and things like Father’s Day and his birthday are hard.”

Mrs Lawson and Emilie originally wanted to raise at least £1,000 but have already exceeded that target.

They will run with a group of family and friends and have called themselves Colin Lawson’s Ladyz.

Mrs Lawson said: “Colin was proud of Emilie and he would be laughing about more than 10 women racing for him. He fought the cancer right to the very end.”

Emilie, a pupil at Cockermouth School, has already raised more than £400 from charity events.

She said: “I am also running for my friend who lost her mum to cancer. The race means something different to everybody.”

Sponsor forms are available in the town’s National Trust shop, the Paper Shop, Lawson’s Haulage, LG’s, Riff Raff and the Honest Lawyer.
