A West Cumbrian record label boss will release a compilation album tomorrow to raise funds for the special care baby unit at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

Simon Mattinson, 36, of Whinlatter Gardens, Workington, runs SiZe Records UK and wanted to thank the unit for looking after his daughter Dee, who was born on December 29 last year.

Simon, who is married to Sarah, said: “Soon after she was born she was taken to the special care unit for a few days.

“Although she was only taken there as a precaution and was surrounded by babies much more in need of care than she was, she received treatment that was second to none.

“It was heartbreaking to see so many tiny poorly babies but equally amazing to see the way they were being looked after by the staff.

“Around spring I came up with the idea of raising some money for the unit to thank them for the way they looked after our little girl and also because it is no secret that the unit really needs charitable donations.”

He said the most obvious way to raise the money was via his record label and in the autumn he began to ask bands to donate tracks.

Simon added: “Almost everyone I asked was keen to be involved and donate tracks to help the cause.”

Musicians include local acts I Am Spartacus, With Lights Out, Glover, Colt 45 and Kontiki Suite as well as Demons of Ruby Mae and Paris band Big Money Makers. Former Shallow Call frontman Phil O’Driscoll’s new project The Pen The Sword are also included on the album.

The album, called D, costs £5. It features 16 tracks and will be available from SiZeRecordsUK.bandcamp.com from tomorrow.

All proceeds will go to the special care baby unit.
