West Cumbrian craft club members keep on knitting

HUNDREDS of knitted items and quilts have been donated to worthy causes by the Distington Village Craft Club over the last decade and the women who produce the goods are showing no signs of stopping.
The women’s group knitted 90 items for charity last year alone, including scarves, jumpers and hats which were given to flood-hit families in Cockermouth.
Group member Yvonne Pittman, 78, of Distington, has been knitting for more than 60 years.
She said: “I absolutely love knitting. It’s become my life. It is a great skill and I get so much enjoyment out of it.
“I moved to Distington six years ago from Cornwall and this group has allowed me to feel at home and to make friends.
“I started knitting 60 years ago out of necessity. We needed to knit because it was cheaper than buying clothes but now I just love it and I enjoy knitting to help others.”
The women’s group, which meets in the community centre every Tuesday, has joined forces with Project Linus to donate knitted blankets to children in other areas of the world that need them. Members are now knitting for that.
Anne Shepherd, 62, of Common End, said: “Our group started 11 years ago and it’s still going strong. We have around 18 members who come and knit items to send to charity.
“It gives us all a great sense of satisfaction to be able to help and we will continue to make items.
“This club is a lifeline for some people and we have no plans to stop any time soon.”
