Council agrees scrutiny of joint county group

ALLERDALE council’s executive committee has agreed to form a scrutiny committee to monitor a county-wide working party.EATONFIELD Developments, which is planning a multi-million pound development on the former Corus site in Workington, has invited Allerdale councillors on an escorted coach tour of the site, where demolition has now begun.BOY George, former Culture Club singer, will play in Cumbria later this year.
A group, comprising representatives of all local authorities in Cumbria, was set up in 2005 to consider joint training needs and areas of common interest .
Now Allerdale has agreed to pay £6,000 a year for a committee to oversee the local authority agreement.
Coun Sam Standage said the scrutiny committee was a waste of time and money and was adding another tier to local government.
But council leader Joe Milburn said it was essential.
He said: “We depend on negotiations and the implications of the joint group.”
The company said the trip would enable members to gain an understanding of the scope and nature of the 87 acre development, which is expected to include 300 homes, a hotel, shops, medical centre, a “care village” for the elderly, residential home, small railway station and steel museum.
The 1980s icon, who shot to fame with hits Karma Chameleon and Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? will appear at the Sands Centre, Carlisle, on October 10.
