Plans for a £25 million 150-home estate in Workington have been revealed.
Story Homes wants to create the development on land opposite Wentworth Park, off Moor Road, Stainburn.
The company, headed by Carlisle millionaire Fred Story, has lodged a planning application with Allerdale council.
Story Homes said that 30 of the properties would be designated as ‘affordable’ with the rest sold at market value.
If the plans are approved, two, three and four-bedroom properties would be built on the site.
More than half of the homes would be four-bedroom, in a range of semi-detached, detached and link-style builds.
A small number of bungalows have also been included.
A decision is due to be made on the plans next year and work could start from next summer.
Graham Parker, technical manager at Story Homes, said: “This proposal represents a fantastic opportunity for Allerdale to deliver much-needed open market and affordable housing in the borough, and for Workington to benefit from a high quality housing development, including substantial public open space.
“The proposal will generate investment and employment in the short to medium term, and enhance Workington’s provision of quality family housing in the longer term.”
At the centre of the development, the firm has designed space for a children’s play area which can be used by the wider community.
A further 21,000 square feet of open space has also been designated for the estate.

What about houses to rent? We are unusual in having this desire to buy houses. Economic commentators on the news are always reminding us of how most of the world see renting as normal. We are at the mercy of the banks with high interest morgages which can change at the whim of the Government or City. Have
a look at what rates are available in America, 35 year fixed rates at 3 percent. Why do we rush to get ripped off?

Have your say
@ Andrew - "affordable" is 3.5 times the avaerge parish household income (in this case the Parish is probably Stainburn) - not sure what the average income is there but I've just looked at the average for Allerdale which is £25k per year median or £31k mean, so that would make a house about £88k or £108k give or take depending on which average you use.
