Apartment plan for West Cumbrian brewery site

Plans to create 16 apartments next to Cockermouth’s Jennings Brewery have been revealed.

Marston’s, which owns Jennings, has applied to Allerdale council to convert the grade two listed maltings building on Brewery Lane.

It was formerly used for brewery production, storage and offices but has been empty since before the 2009 floods. The company said it has to be used for something before it deteriorates.

Marston’s wants to convert the five-storey building to create 10 two-bedroom apartments and six three-bedroom apartments.

A building next to the Maltings, once used as a bottling plant, will be demolished to create 22 parking spaces, surrounded by a wall being built as part of the town’s flood defence scheme.

The ground floor of the building will be used as a storage area and include a lift and cycle park.

Have your say

Yeoman - the brewery is not leaving the town. The proposal is to use the empty maltings building - the brewery is on the other side of the road. No jobs lost unless Marstons have other plans.

Another industrial plant and works gone from the area. The average age in this county is getting higher although we are not living longer. This is because their is little work for our children and they are having to leave the county. Older (retired) are cumming into the county to retire in a low pollution and tranquil area.
