Aspatria's Tour of Britain anger

Aspatria town councillors are angry that the Tour of Britain cycling race will not pass through the town.

They agreed to write to the organisers of the prestigious event, which takes place in September, the county and district councils to demand that the route be changed to take in Aspatria.

The Tour of Britain, the Uk's biggest cycling event, is due to pass through Maryport, Cockermouth, Workington, Whitehaven and Keswick as part of the Lake District stage on Monday, September 16.

Aspatria Mayor Alan Reay said this was the second time that Aspatria had been overlooked, as it was only added to the Olympic torch relay route last summer after local lobbying.

He said: “They did it with the Olympic torch relay. They were just going to drive through Aspatria without stopping. There are seven towns in Allerdale but we always seem to miss out.

“This cycle race is a huge thing for the area. Why should our children, especially, miss out on seeing it?”

He said it was easy to include Aspatria on the route without any problem.

He said: “They can go through Wigton and then through Aspatria and can then rejoin the A595 via Parsonby and Plumbland.”

A spokesman for the tour said the itinerary had not yet been released.

He added: “We have put out a generic map showing the area that the tour will take in but the full itinerary will not be released until the end of next month.”

The event has been organised with the Lake District National Park, Carlisle City Council, Cumbria County Council, South Lakeland District Council, and Cumbria Tourism.

Have your say

It would be great if the cyclists could show other road users respect. I got caught up in the 700 cyclists riding out today. Even where it was safe to overtake they would not let me pass as they were travelling over both sides of the road with not a care in the world whilst the legitimate road users on their way to work just had to sit and watch. Thank goodness I eventually could turn onto the motorway.

the tour of britain would be great for asaptria, tourism, people on streets. Why do car car drivers always moan about cyclists. Try cycling for yourselves and 1) see how it feels on the road as a cyclist (then you cabn give an opinion) 2) see how fitr it makes you, coinfidence, self esteem etc. I drive a car but trust me, riding your bike is so much better...better for everyone. These are the best cyclists in the world - show some respect at least for one day. Please bring this race to Aspatria
