Big ideas for West Cumbrian railway station

A £4 million vision to transform Workington’s railway station has been revealed.
A wish list that includes a hotel, offices, better car parking, toilets and improved signs has been drawn up by the county council.
The proposals were put together after reports that a big increase of passengers and freight trains was likely because of the development of West Cumbria’s nuclear and energy industry.
The council has selected Workington station for a development plan. A number of other west coast stations could also be improved.
It said there was a large area next to the railway station that could be used for commercial development, including a hotel and offices.
An ecological survey would have to be carried out first as there were a number of protected species at the site.
Jonathan Smith, council manager of area highways and transport, presented the report to Cumbria County Council’s local committee for Allerdale.
He said: “The plan sets out a vision of what we want. We are putting together a package of funding partners.
“The council’s integrated transport team can now press on with the next step of working with partners to get the funding.”
The committee backed the recommendations and agreed that new toilets, more car parking and better travel information and signs to buses and taxis would be a priority if funding was found.
An ecological survey, feasibility study and safety audit would be required before any development.

The priority is for Northern Rail to get their act together and provide a proper service instead of the same timetables year in year out....and a vastly improved Sunday service(3 trains a day is a joke) which will allow the chance for tourists and locals to come and travel down the coast from Carlisle to Barrow and visit places en route.So the Council need to get on Northern Rail's case and tell them to provide a better quality of service as it is currently stale and suits nobody.There is already a hotel next to the station,so what is the point in having another? Some proper information screens regarding running trains would be nice in the station....Whitehaven is the only station on the line to have these in place,so its about time others have the same in place.
