Cockermouth Main Street revamp plans revealed

Ambitious plans for the £950,000 refurbishment of Cockermouth’s Main Street have been revealed.

Have your say

I think money could be better spent making Cockermouth bustling again. Helping the local traders with free parking instead of having wardens everywhere and insufficient parking guidelines especially on the old market place. What is making Cockermouth look a bit dowdy are the empty shops, how about grants for local enterprise helping local businesses succeed.

Waste of money people need to feel connected to the town now not with rubbish from history this should not hapen. What we need is connections to famous people in town now and local events like brass bands and football. Wordsworth wasent even a good poet. I have connections with international sportsmen and coach football in the USA. Why should we not celebrate this instead of always looking at the past.

@Derek

There are other people associated with Cockermouth not just Wordsworth. As Dr Smith suggested, John Dalton, see following link for info, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dalton is someone who has been overlooked in this area for far to long.

@Dr Smith

Good point, but where's John Dalton house? or Coleridge Cottage? or Southey Square?

Cockermouth has the big asset of Wordsworth House and has used that to best effect.

Now, what's that famous Coleridge poem that EVERYBODY IN THE WORLD knows the first line of - oh, yes, "In Xanadu did Kubla Khan a stately pleasure dome decree" - so do we build ourselves the Cockermouth Pleasure Dome ? Or an Ancient Mariner ship?

I say we continue with the daffodils thank you very much.

The revamp plans are to be applauded. However,some further aspects are suggested for consideration. The Cumbrian who has had most influence on world history is John Dalton. He should be featured much more prominently in Cockermouth than he is currently. There are three statues of him in Manchester ! Two of the Lake Poets are mentioned but there is no reference to Southey, who was Poet Laureate and perhaps as significant as Coleridge.
