Holiday let plan for former stable block

Plans have been lodged to covert a former stable block near Workington into eight holiday lets.

Work on part of the stable block at Cumberland Lodge, Winscales, which was previously used for racehorses, would be carried out in two phases.

The first phase would include the creation of four holiday lets and a communal and grassed area.

Phase two would be the conversion of stables into the remaining holiday lets.

Owner George Campbell, who has applied to Allerdale council for the change of use, also wants to create a car park for 10 vehicles and three disability spaces to the west of the building.

Plans suggest that the other part of the building would remain as stables and could be used by guests staying at the accommodation or as a training facility.

At least 25 horses could be accommodated by the remaining stables.

Agent Ric Outhwaite, of Arrow Planning, said in a planning statement: “The opportunity for this diversification is perhaps unique as it is not often that there is the opportunity for tourists to come and stay somewhere that has properly prepared gallops to exercise a horse.

“It might not appeal to everyone but it could appeal to many.”

Mr Campbell declined to comment.
