Controversial plans for a new £9.41m leisure centre in Workington have been given the green light by Allerdale council planners.
Allerdale council’s development panel today approved plans for a new leisure complex on land at The Cloffocks.
The council submitted plans in April to build a new centre near to its Allerdale House headquarters.
It would be a replacement for the current sports centre at Moorclose and would include a 25-metre eight-lane swimming pool with spectator seating, making it regional standard.
Six objectors and three supporters spoke at the meeting.
The plans were approved by a vote of nine in favour, two against and one abstention.

Have your say
Those who did vote in the referendum (whose voices were subsequently ignored) were overwhelmingly against the new centre being built. The fact that there was a low turnout is completely irrelevant, those that voted, voted against it. There's no rule to say that a % of people have to vote for the vote to be valid. At the last referendum the Council had, for their local plan, less than a third of electorate turned out and this was despite having a polling station in every district and card dropped through your door. Does this mean that the vote was invalid? By the same logic you would have to say yes, but of course, these things are only invalid if you happen to disagree with them. You've only got to flick through the pages of the guff that comes out of the Council, like the latest 'Allerdale PLC' nonsense to know that it's run by people more obsessed with flip charts and power point presentations than they are with being in tune with the majority of the people they're supposed to serve. They're a shameful excuse for a public service and as someone said earlier, how were the tenders given out for this? There's some questions to be asked here and nobody seems to be doing the asking.
Are any of you commenting, current members of the existing leisure center?Well i am and the decision should have been down to current leisure members.I would have to drive to the new center as i am from Harrington and i bet a pound to the penny there will be parking fees to pay
