Maryport town centre boss leaving

Maryport's town centre manager, who has spearheaded the town’s bid to become a Mary Portas pilot, is to leave the job on June 7.

Town centre manager
Claire Driver

Claire Driver, 36, was appointed last May by Allerdale council in a bid to revitalise the town centre.

She recently urged business people to get behind a bid for Maryport to become one of 12 towns across Britain to be involved in an initiative headed by Government shopping guru Mary Portas.

The town is still waiting to hear whether it has been successful.

She also helped to restart Maryport Traders Group.

But Ms Driver is set to leave and carry out full-time freelance work for West is Best, an arts engagement programme funded by the Arts Council England, Allerdale and Copeland councils, until September.

She will also spend time renovating a property in the south of France, which she hopes to rent out as a holiday home.

She said: “Part of my work was about gauging how traders fitted into the bigger picture and getting everyone to work together for the good of the town.

“Maryport has got a close community feel. Nowhere has the attractions that Maryport has.”

Allerdale council plans to employ two new town centre managers, who will look after Maryport and other borough towns. It is not known when they will start.
