New homes plan for Cockermouth

Plans for 12 new homes in Cockermouth have been revealed.
The Stamper family, of Wellington Farm, wants permission to build a 12-home estate on land which it owns off Brigham Road, by the A66.
The triangular piece of land, measuring about two acres, is bordered by the Parklands Development and the Harrot Hill estate, is currently used as grazing land.
Leigh Stamper, who runs Wellington Farm, said: “It is something we have been working on for a number of years and we were waiting for the right time.
“The land was more of a nuisance and because of its size there was a limit on what you could stock it with.
“I love Cockermouth to bits and any development round the town will be good.
“We need business in the town and tourism is one way of bringing people in but we have to have families living here who will hopefully shop in Cockermouth.
“I have no problem with affordable housing and in reality it is the best way forward.”
If the family get permission, they plan to sell the land to a developer to build the homes.
Mr Stamper said there had already been interest from local, national and international companies.
Of the 12 detached homes, two would be designated as “affordable”.
Eight would be served by a central access road with a turning circle and private driveways, while four would have direct access on to Brigham Road to points beyond the main site entrance.
The Highways Authority said the existing roads would be able to serve the site.
House designs would reflect the character of the local area, including brick and concrete tiles, and the low cost homes would be built to the same standard.
An existing pavement would also be lengthened along the front of the site and existing trees would be kept.
Allerdale council will make the final decision.
The application comes on the back of several housing plans for the town, including a 221-home estate on land between the A66 and The Fitz.
Lakeland Leisure Limited’s proposals were given the go-ahead after it won an appeal in June. Eighty-eight of those homes were designated as affordable.
Plans to build 24 homes off Lorton Road are currently the subject of an appeal after they were rejected by Allerdale council in February, while plans have been submitted to build 88 homes at the former county council depot on Sullart Street.
