Plans for more homes in Cockermouth area

Plans for more than 60 new homes in the Cockermouth area have moved a step closer.

An application has been submitted for 50 homes at Kirkcross Quarry in Brigham, while 12 homes planned in the town look set to get the go-ahead next week.

North Homes Ltd and Kirkcross developments have applied to build 50 houses at Kirkcross Quarry on Low Road. Two years ago plans were approved for 35 holiday lodges on the site but that permission has now expired.

The new proposals include 15 four-bedroom houses, 12 three-bedroom houses and three two-bedroom houses, all for open market sale.

There would also be 11 three-bedroom houses and nine two-bedroom homes for affordable rent. A play area is planned in the centre of the development. Each house would have parking for two cars and there would be eight visitor parking spaces.

Meanwhile, plans by the Stamper family of Wellington Farm, Cockermouth, for 12 houses off the town’s Brigham Road look set to be approved.

Two of those houses would be designated as affordable – one two-bedroom house for social rent and another for low-cost sale.

Planning officers felt the development was sustainable and that the houses would contribute to the shortfall in future housing supply.

If the family get permission, they plan to sell the land to a developer.

Leigh Stamper, who runs Wellington Farm, said there had already been interest from local, national and international companies.

Allerdale council’s development panel will make the final decision on Tuesday but planning officers have recommended approval.

The applications come on the back of several housing plans for the town, including a 221-home estate on land between the A66 and The Fitz.

Lakeland Leisure Limited’s proposals were given the go-ahead after it won an appeal in June. Eighty-eight of those homes were designated as affordable.

Plans to build 24 homes off Lorton Road were thrown out by inspectors in September but a new planning application is expected, which will include some affordable housing.
