A woman will have to remove a uPVC window from a High Lorton holiday cottage after losing an appeal against a Lake District National Park Authority ruling.

The authority issued a listed building enforcement notice in August after a traditional timber sliding sash window at Cobblers Cottage was replaced with a similar uPVC window.

The notice told Mrs B Mycock to remove the uPVC window and put in a timber window to match the appearance of the original.

Mrs Mycock appealed, stating that the window needed to be usable as a fire escape route and the original was replaced because it could not be opened.

Planning inspector John Braithwaite said the original could have been replaced with an opening timber-framed window.

He added: “UPVC is an inappropriate modern material for an external feature of a listed building, which is included in the statutory list because of its architectural and history interest.”

He upheld the enforcement notice.
