Safety campaign for main West Cumbrian road gets police backing

Police have thrown their weight into a campaign to improve main road safety at Flimby.

Residents and Maryport town councillors are concerned that the layout of the A596 could lead to an accident.

The juxtaposition of bus stops and traffic islands means there have been many cases of cars trying to overtake parked buses.

Some vehicles pass onto the wrong side of a traffic island into heavy oncoming traffic.

Councillor Carol Tindall said the traffic islands, which were meant to protect pedestrians, had the opposite effect.

She said: “Last week a couple of elderly women were nearly bowled over and the week before that it was kids. It will not be long before there is a really serious accident.”

Cumbria Constabulary’s traffic management department has identified the problem in a report to Cumbria Highways and to Maryport Town Council.

There is particular concern about a bus stop at the Station Road-Brook Street junction.

The report recommends that a bus lay-by is built to help traffic flow and improve pedestrian safety.

Maryport Town Council this week agreed to ask the county highways department to consider the proposal.

Have your say

It's always been a problem on that road, that's why there are double yellow lines, traffic islands and a 30mph speed limit along there.

People have been killed on that road before the calming was introduced.

Now it's down to the impatience of drivers - well, if you have to travel that road, please obey the rules of the road.

Get the police down there to stop and fine people and make them aware of their bad driving habits.

This was bad planning from the outset why could the traffic department not see ahead as to the amount of traffic on our roads which is getting more every day.The traffic islands are a bad Idea the road is narrow enough for any one to have time to cross the road when it is safe to do so and to put them where there is a bus stop is rank bad planning. When a bus stops in Flimby(which is every 15 mins)there is always a long tail back so drivers are taking big risks going round the traffic islands. Also the bus drivers need to park in the bus lay byes better as the back end of the bus is always sticking out.The stop at the train station is dangerous too as drivers are speeding round this traffic island and could hit anyone on the edge of the pavement waiting to cross or coming out of the shop.
