Sir Tony: ‘My knighthood is for my family, not just me’

No-one could be prouder of Workington MP Tony Cunningham’s knighthood than his family.

Have your say

Well done on your knighthood. We should be pleased that local people are doing well. They don't give knighthoods to just anyone and we should be proud and not jealous or negative!

There are at least three "in favour" comments on Tony Cunningham's knighthood.
It seems that if you are a "Workington lad", not part of "that London lot" and finally "an ordinary person" you would also qualify for this accolade.
Is this all it takes! I was under the impression it was a reward for outstanding work and results. I must have been mistaken.

Can someone please explain what Mr Cunningham has done for his Workington Constituency to deserve this honour? We all know that he has worked tirelessly for his own position within the Labour Party, but his constituency, well not a lot as far as I can see.

I am really pleased for Sir Tony, he has worked hard for this area, closeures of businesses are not the MP's fault and look at the other areas like the Energy Coast, he was tireless during the floods and where other politicians were just waiting for face time on the TV. I doubt that anyone could have done more for the area and for a working class lad from Workington I say well done mate.

After the floods and bridge collapse this fella made a visit to my place of work for a tour. On the morning of the visit he asked if he could be collected from the walk bridge as he had forgotten about the bridge collapse and we were on the other side. What a joke this fella is when he forgets about something as big as that

I'll bet the former employees of the Workington Steel Works will be pleased after all the effort he put in trying to keep it open - oh hang on a minute........

Radiation Free Lakeland suspect that this timely honour has not a little to do with Tony’s silence on the plan to dump high level nuclear waste underneath his constituency – a plan which has the capacity to out do the nastiest of land mines!

Well some voices have spoken about how disgusted they are; I am joining them in that. This bloke has done nothing for West Cumbria but yet gets such an honour - what is this world coming to. i only hope that this is remembered at the next election if he stands again. I can recall during the MP's expense saga that when he had his published there were entries showing him claiming food shopping and a sky subscription - wish I could claim such. This is award is ridiculous.
