Sir Tony sees how aid is working in Ethiopia

Workington MP Sir Tony Cunningham has visited Ethiopia to look at the country’s health problems.
He was one of five MPs and Lords invited on a six-day trip by the charity Results, an international organisation campaigning to end extreme poverty.
Sir Tony visited St Peter’s Hospital in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa. He spoke to people suffering from tuberculous and other illness.
He saw how drugs are being used to prevent the transmission of HIV from mothers to babies.
Sir Tony said that some of the people suffering from TB could spend up to two years in hospital.
He also went to the city of Hawassa to look at vaccination projects with the charity Save the Children.
Sir Tony said: “What is encouraging is that Ethiopia is moving in the right direction.
“The message from the people I met is that aid works and is working.
“They are so grateful to the people of Britain for the help they give.”
He will also make two visits to Geneva in Switzerland this month to meet the chairman of the Global Fund to talk about his experiences in Ethiopia and to put the case for continued funding in Africa.
He has also been asked to attend a meeting of parliamentarians from across the globe at the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, which looks at how world disasters are dealt with and what can be done to prevent them.
He will draw on his experiences of flooding in West Cumbria and from a visit to the flood-hit Philippines last year.

Is it not time we suspended foreign aid. Do we not make more than enough contributions supporting all of the immigrants that Tony Blair and New Labour brought in to the country.
As for this trip, I only hope that he had someone else fill in his expense forms; it will save him later embarrassment
