Spare cash helps community events in Maryport
Last updated at 22:05, Thursday, 14 June 2012
An underspend of £4,500 in Maryport Town Council’s budget has meant that money can be diverted to support community events such as the jubilee and the Olympic torch relay.
Town clerk Paul Bramley said that councillors had closely monitored the annual budget of £126,000, which had allowed it to divert money into community events.
Mr Bramley said: “The council has been able to put more resources into its provision of Christmas lights, replacing old equipment and improving and adding to lighting displays, for example.
“The council has provided commemorative jubilee pens and pencils for all schoolchildren in the Maryport area, costing £840.
“It supported Maryport Rugby Club‘s jubilee family day with a £2,000 grant. St Mary’s Church was given £300 towards the cost of booklets used during a special jubilee service.”
The council has also provided commemorative Olympic torch medals for all Maryport area schoolchildren at a cost of £1,500, and is arranging food bags for infant and junior pupils.
Bookers Cash & Carry has contributed towards the food bags.
