Young mayor to take office in Workington

Workington's youngest town councillor is preparing to take the reins as he becomes mayor on Wednesday.
Coun Andrew Lawson, who became Workington council’s youngest ever member when he was elected last May, has been deputy mayor for the last year. He will become Workington’s youngest ever mayor.
Coun Lawson worked alongside previous mayor Mel Pettitt, who died while in office, and his successor Nik Hardy.
The 21-year-old, of Napier Street, said the town’s mayoralty would symbolically pass to a new generation when he takes office.
He said he hoped to show that young people have a place in politics and prove that they are not all bad.
He will also be carrying on a family tradition of politics as his great grandfather Joe Scott was a union man for British Steel and a borough councillor.
Coun Lawson said: “I’m a little bit nervous but it’s going to be an interesting year.
“There’s going to be a lot of expectation in me and I hope I can do it justice.”
Coun Lawson, who works as a barman in the town’s Wetherspoons pub, will take office at the council’s annual meeting at the Carnegie Theatre on Wednesday.

I know this young lad, and to be fair to him he is more mature and polite than many older people in general, not just in offices with responsibility.
Being an elected member is often thankless, and on a Twon Council VOLUNTARY- Good on you, good luck. Perhaps John Smiths could see if there are any vacancies on thier local council?View all 7 comments on this article

What a closed minded and negative comment to make about a young person. We need people from all walks of life involved in our democratic processes. Wisdom is not the preserve of older people either.
