Help us to clean up our borough

A CLEANER Allerdale is the aim of a new campaign launched by the Times & Star today.

We have joined with Workington Civic Trust and Allerdale Council to launch Keep It Clean.

Each week our anti-litter campaign will highlight problems throughout the Allerdale district.

It is in direct response to a concern that we know our readers share - the scourge of litter.

We now urge readers to join in our war on waste.

While Allerdale council may not have the resources to tackle all the grot-spots at once, it is committed to a long term aim of getting rid of litter, cleaning up graffiti and tidying up the mess.

Discarded cigarette butts were the focus of its attentions in Workington this week.

Together, we aim to encourage community spirit and a greater pride in the area.

And that means urging people not to drop litter or dump rubbish in the first place.

This campaign will run throughout the spring and summer and will look at all the things that can blight our area - from fly-tipping to abandoned cars and dog fouling.

We will highlight the black-spots that most concern you - and try to get something done about them.

Hospice At Home West Cumbria has found an excellent way to mark its 21st anniversary year.

The creation of the Margaret Dowling Memorial Fund, to support the training of hospice workers, shows that this fine organisation remains firmly committed to extending its role.

It is a fitting tribute to the late Mrs Dowling, one of its founders and a remarkable woman.
