POLICE are advising campers not to pitch tents on low-lying ground in very wet weather following the evacuation of a Keswick campsite after heavy rain on Tuesday.

Forecasters are predicting that the rain and unsettled weather will continue into next week with showers predicted until Monday.

But the Met Office says that there are no severe weather or flooding alerts warning of torrential downpours like the one that forced 100 people out of their Keswick campsites on Tuesday night.

More than 100 school children had to be evacuated after water levels rose dangerously through the night at Keswick and Scotgate Holiday Park at Braithwaite.

Authorities decided to order the evacuation after water levels at Derwentwater and the River Greta, which border the two camp sights, rose quickly.

A refuge centre was set up at Keswick School.

Police said yesterday that most of those displaced had returned to their original pitches or found alternative accommodation and that only 13 people remained at the evacuation centre yesterday.

Police are advising campers and site owners to avoid pitching tents on low-lying ground during wet weather.

A forecaster from the Met Office said that flooding was caused by a very slow moving band of rain, more typical of autumn and winter conditions.

Showers will continue this week but wind will move on the rain clouds making it less likely there will be localised flooding.

Forecasters predict a clear day today with temperatures reaching 16C. Heavy rain is forecast overnight on Friday continuing into Saturday.

More rain in on the cards for Sunday night and wet weather is expected to continue all day on Monday with temperatures reaching 14C at a maximum.
