Reopened west Cumbria road bridge is one way only

The newly reopened Broughton Bridge can only be used by motorists to get into the village.

The bridge, which is just off the A66 between Cockermouth and Workington, was closed following November’s floods.
It has been repaired and was opened to traffic on Monday – but only for drivers travelling towards the village from the A66.
Cumbria County Council said the bridge is narrow and the approach roads to it through Broughton have limited capacity.
Officers believe that opening it one way should ease some of the traffic pressure but prevent roads around the bridge becoming clogged with cars.
They have limited the use to one way because of the anticipated demand. This will allow traffic to turn off the A66 and use the bridge but won’t allow traffic to travel in the opposite direction across the bridge and turn on to the A66.
Once across the bridge motorists must travel through Little Broughton to the A594 to get to Broughton Moor/Seaton and Maryport.
Officers said the system will be reassessed when the temporary road bridge in Workington opens.

As it is now you are diverted up through little Broughton which in parts is just as narrow as the centre of Broughton from which we are barred. This makes it hardly worth the bother of turning over the bridge unless you live in Broughton. Surely the road through Broughton should be opened up to this one way traffic, yes it will cause some inconvenience to those living in Broughton, but surely that is a small price for them to pay to help reduce the travelling time and miles of thousands of us for a few weeks until the new bridge opens. Broughton Moor has had to take all of the Seaton/Flimby/Northside traffic since the floods. They have not complained as they realise we are all suffering until the bridges are all opened again.
