Reds have added another forward to their already dangerous front line.
Workington AFC announced on Friday that Iyrwah Gooden will join Danny Grainger’s squad when play and training returns. The 20 year-old winger is an alum of League Two club Mansfield Town as well as Workington’s non-league rivals, Clitheroe and Ramsbottom
Reds will be happy to see Gooden on their side of the pitch having seen his surging style of attacking first hand, when the Rams defeated Workington 2-0 in 2020.
Manager Danny Grainger told the Times & Star: “He’s a player we’ve been looking at for a while. He’s a player we were interested in last season but he went to higher leagues to try and test himself.”
Gooden will be an asset to the squad when play recommences. Grainger said: “I think he’ll create competition, I think he’ll score and create goals.”
Reds bosses are cultivating competition for shirts, they already have a formidable line-up including Dav Symington, Scott Allison and Conor Tinnion. Gooden’s move to Reds sees him reunite with another explosive attacker, Reuben Jerome, who he played alongside at Ramsbottom.
Grainger said: “Reuben came in, when he gets the ball at his feet he doesn’t let it go, he can turn people as well. That’s what we want we don’t want the ball in the air. It’s a real competition for places now.”
Gooden has suffered the same frustrations as all non-league players during the pandemic.
He told the Workington AFC website: “It’s not been the best period for me because there hasn’t been a lot of games. It was more annoying than anything, not knowing when we were going to restart, with nothing being clear.” But clarity on the season could be on the way, The FA have collected the votes of each team in the NPL and they will now decide on if it can be completed.
