Extra time heartbreak for Cockermouth

Cockermouth were knocked out of the U13 County Cup in dramatic fashion, their semi-final with Pirelli going to extra time.

Cockermouth 2

Pirelli 3

Earlier Cockermouth had fought back from being 2-0 down to level the game but the bigger and stronger Pirelli side won through.

Pirelli started brighter, putting Cockermouth under pressure and scoring after 10 minutes.

Cockermouth started to produce the better football with wingers Joe Fanthorpe and Jonty Fish to the fore but couldn’t find an equaliser and it was against the run of play that Pirelli from a corner doubled their lead.

Cockermouth continued to play good flowing football and their reward came when Hugh Taylor was put in on goal to curl a shot past the Pirelli keeper.

The goal added to Cockermouth’s confidence and Pirelli were struggling to get out of their own half.

Cockermouth equalised from a Lewis Horsley corner flicked on by Owen Dixon and well finished off by Josh Young to make it 2-2 at half-time.

Cockermouth again produced the better football in the second half but there were no further goals and extra time was required.

The first period was evenly matched with both sides having chances but coming back from 2-0 down began to take its toll.

Pirelli pressed them back into their own half and though Cockermouth’s defence was marshaled by Owen Dixon the pressure finally told and Pirelli scored.
