A CUMBRIAN women's rugby team are celebrating a promotion win and undefeated season after only two years in their league - and they hope to keep inspiring the next generation as they continue to blossom.

Keswick Falcons, a women's rugby team based at Keswick Rugby Club celebrated on Sunday, April 7 after gaining promotion in their second season, winning the NC2 NORTH NORTH league for 2023- 2024.

Sunday saw the Keswick Falcons pull off their 12th and final win of the season making it 12/12, after only playing contact rugby for the last two years.

The last two years have not only fostered great women's rugby at the club, but also friendships with the Falcon's now calling themselves a family who also help each other off the pitch.

The women's team have been an asset to the club not only on the field but also off the pitch as a boost for the rugby club, with the club becoming a social hub for locals in the town.

Head of women and girls rugby at Keswick Rugby Club Alan Weightman said: "You get the men's games on the Saturday, then the women's games on the Sunday so what that means that for two separate days the club is busy.

"It has reinvigorated the club atmosphere again, it's become quite a big social hub and reinvigorated the club really.

"The youngest player we have got at the minute is 17 year old and in the contact group our oldest player will be in their 40's, in our non contact group the oldest player there is 68 years old, the age range is massive."

Alan says the women view the club as 'a family' and told of how the team has supported each other through a number of different issues within the last couple of years.

He said: "One comment that I got was 'the night I bought my boots after a few drinks to go to my first training session was one of the best decisions I have ever made' and that's what I think it is. They really do see it as a sisterhood really."

The Keswick Falcons have recently developed an under 18's teams who will begin training alongside the falcons this year before going into a league next season.

Anybody is welcome to begin training with any age range of the Keswick Falcons, more information can be found here.
