Goal ace Charlie Wyke says Carlisle United must show the right attitude against non-league Welling as he bids to make up for his cup heartbreak with the Blues.

The in-form striker will be gunning for the National League strugglers this weekend in the FA Cup second round.

And Wyke is hoping the competition holds better fortunes for him than the Capital One Cup, when injury kept him out of United’s dream trip to Liverpool.

The Blues could be just 90 minutes away from another tie against top-flight clubs, who enter the FA Cup in the third round.

Wyke said: “Having missed out on Liverpool, which was disappointing, it would be nice to progress and get another big team.

“Hopefully we can go quite far in the FA Cup.

“Welling play in a hard, physical league and we’ve got to go there with a good attitude.

“Tom Miller played against them last year and he said it’s not the best pitch to play on, but we’ve just got to go and play our natural game and hopefully the result will come with it.”

Wyke has hit form for the Blues with three goals in two games, including a brace against Crawley last Saturday.

The former Middlesbrough frontman impressed alongside top scorer Jabo Ibehre and is now on five for the campaign, despite missing several games with a broken metatarsal.

Wyke says he is benefiting from a more positive mindset around Keith Curle’s play-off chasing squad than last season.

The 22-year-old said: “It’s much more of a happy place. You go out there thinking you’re going to win every time.

“We were even disappointed when we drew against Portsmouth because we played well and were in front for quite a lot of the game.

“The hat-trick wasn’t to be against Crawley – it would have been my first one – but I was happy with two goals and three points.

“I still don’t think I’m 100 per cent but a few more games and I’ll be there.”

Ibehre has also been quick to get back on the goal trail since returning to fitness, with two in his last two outings.

With Derek Asamoah also pushing for a place, Wyke says Curle has plenty of options in attack.

And he insists he is sticking to his pre-season target of 20 goals even though he missed a chunk of the campaign.

Wyke said: “It’s been frustrating not being able to play all the games, but I think it’s still a realistic target and hopefully I can get there. It’s a good competition between me and Jabo and it would be nice to catch him.” but hopefully he’ll keep scoring and I’ll keep scoring.

“Healthy competition is good for everyone. Even if you score you’re not guaranteed to play the following week. Del boy came on the other day and made a difference, and the midfielders and defenders also know they’ve got to stay on their toes.”
