Mark Gillespie says Carlisle United are ready to go “toe to toe” with a physical AFC Wimbledon side tonight.

The Blues keeper insists Keith Curle’s men will stand up for themselves against Neal Ardley’s side.

And Gillespie says a victory in south London can help the Blues build momentum as they aim to enhance their play-off challenge.

Gillespie said: “We’ve had a couple of really tough games against Wimbledon - they’re a strong, physical side, but so are we.

“We’re going to go toe-to-toe with them. I’m looking forward to it. If we can get a result there it sets us up well for Morecambe on Saturday.

“We can go there and get a bit of momentum. If we get a result we’re three unbeaten and looking good. There’s nothing to fear.”

Gillespie, 23, impressed with some vital saves as Carlisle held on for victory against Stevenage on Saturday.

The club’s longest-serving player said the weekend win proved United are a more resilient team than in previous campaigns.

“It’s plain to see and that’s something we haven’t had,” the gloveman said.

“In the past we’ve either been very good or got turned over, whereas this season when we don’t perform well, we’re still in games, still fighting.

“That’s down to the manager, and the players he’s brought in who are showing more character and belief.”

Gillespie said the recent long-term contract signed by Curle was “good for the club” as it ensured there was 100 per cent focus on the job in hand.

The former Newcastle youngster added that United should not be shy about their ambition of making the top seven this campaign.

He said: “The players are focused and the undoubted aim is the play-offs.

“So there’s no need to disguise or hide that.”
