Carlisle United will take on Premier League giants Liverpool at Anfield in the third round of the Capital One Cup after their outstanding 2-1 win at Queens Park Rangers last night.

Goals from Derek Asamoah and a late winner from substitute Jason Kennedy sandwiched the R’s’ Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’ leveller, giving United a memorable midweek win in the capital.

And Keith Curle’s men were then drawn out of the hat to face Brendan Rodgers’ Reds, the five-time European Cup winners, at Anfield, with the tie set to be played on the week commencing September 21.

And United boss Curle heaped praise on his team, to whom he had made four changes for the tie at Loftus Road, as well as the 458 United supporters who made the long trip south.

“The pleasing thing is the players needed that, and the players have got to get the praise, the accolades, for sticking to the beliefs that I’m implementing within the team,” he said.

“We came to a very good football club, playing against a very good team, and we imposed ourselves on them and got the reward.

“It’s pleasing that we scored in front of them, at their end,” he said of the travelling fans. “I hope the QPR supporters don’t thinking that we were lording it or overcelebrating it - that is just us, showing our appreciation for the miles and the support that we get from our away support.

“As a football team we need to show the appreciation that we’ve got for our away supporters, and at times I’m stood there and all I can hear is Carlisle, ‘blue and white army’. Excellent.”
