National League side Welling United – and another long away trip – stand between Carlisle United and the lucrative third round of the FA Cup.

The Blues were handed a 645-mile round trip to face the Kent outfit in the second round.

It will be the first-ever meeting between the clubs after they were paired in last night’s draw.

And the tie will see Carlisle’s travelling commitments in 2015/16 soar to a staggering 14,500 miles.

It also hands Keith Curle’s side the opportunity to win £27,000 prize money – as well as the chance of a money-spinning draw against a Premier League club if they make it to the third round.

United have already earned £18,000 after their first round victory at Plymouth.

Welling, nicknamed the Wings and led by player-manager Loui Fazakerley, are currently 18th in the National League after surviving in non-league’s top tier on goal difference last term.

They play their home games at their 4,000-capacity Park View Road ground in the borough of Bexley, south east London.

Former Football League players in the Welling ranks include ex-Leyton Orient winger George Porter, while ex-Chelsea youngster Nortei Nortey is also in their squad.

Welling earned their second round place by beating seventh-tier Barwell 2-0, while Carlisle were seeing off League Two leaders Plymouth by the same scoreline.

The victory in Devon required a 780-mile round trip for United’s die-hard travelling supporters.

The Welling trip will be their fifth away game from six cup ties so far this campaign.

In cup competitions alone United’s travelling is now up to 2,599 miles, after previous trips to QPR, Liverpool, Port Vale and Plymouth.

Blues skipper Danny Grainger tweeted: “Did anyone actually think we would be at home? It’s the FA Cup second round, great chance to get into the hat for the big draw! Big month ahead.”

Before the draw Curle said he did not care who Carlisle drew and how far they had to travel in the second round.

After the tie was confirmed he said on United’s website: “[Welling] aren’t a club we know too much about, but we have had them watched as part of our scouting umbrella in the London area.

“That has told us they have a young, vibrant and energetic squad and they will work hard. That in itself tells us we need to show them respect.”

On United’s extra travelling commitments the manager added: “Our London branch supporters will be happy. It’s almost as if we’ve relocated for them this season.

“In all seriousness we don’t mind who we play, or where we have to go. It’s a game of football and we’re in this business to win.

“One thing we can guarantee is that our fans will travel from all over the country, Carlisle included, and we won’t be outdone for noise.”

The sides were paired by Civil Service FC president James Kellett and former Spurs FA Cup winner Garth Crooks in the draw.

The tie will be held sometime over the weekend of December 4-6.
