Carlisle United say they will be pushing for the biggest possible allocation of tickets for their big Capital One Cup tie against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Blues want to give as many fans as possible the chance to watch Keith Curle’s side take on Brendan Rodgers’ Premier League stars.

United are in talks with the Merseyside club over their ticket allocation for the third round tie, which club bosses say could be in the region of 4,500-6,000.

And further discussions are being held at Brunton Park this morning as the Blues aim to finalise plans for selling what are sure to be in-demand tickets.

While United expect to firm up the details soon, they have already hailed the draw as a major shot in the arm for the club and fans.

Sales and marketing director Phil King said: “It couldn’t have been much better, on a number of levels. It’s great for the players to get rewarded, and it’s also fantastic from the supporters’ point of view and from a commercial perspective.

“We’re currently waiting on final details from Liverpool on things like allocation, cost of tickets and further arrangements, and we’ve also got a meeting on our side of things [this morning].

“We should hopefully have a clearer picture by today or tomorrow. We’ll certainly be pushing to take a big allocation.”

The tie is set to be a considerable money-spinner for the League Two club, who will bank 45 per cent of the gate receipts from the Anfield clash.

Sources say the Blues could make around £200,000 from the fixture, which is Carlisle’s first meeting with Liverpool since 1989.

They have already secured prize money of £12,000 for making it through the first two rounds.

And they will hope Liverpool can pull in a similarly big crowd to previous years when they have hosted sides from lower divisions in the Capital One Cup.

Last year, for instance, they drew 41,857 for the visit of Middlesbrough, with a clash with Notts County attracting 42,231 the season before.

United will, though, hope for more tickets for their own fans than those encounters, which saw Boro allocated 2,874 and Notts 2,864.

King said Carlisle will do their best to make any ticketing arrangements straightforward, while he said a possible incentive scheme would be discussed at today’s meeting.

He added: “From a principle point of view we will look to reward the likes of season-ticket holders and members with priority.

“Then it’s whether we look at the option of having another release day, where we reward people who travel to these away games, or people who come along and buy a couple of tickets for [home] league games, which Bradford did last year.

“We don’t want to make it too complicated. The likelihood is the allocation will be anywhere between 4,500-6,000.

“It will be a big boost from a financial point of view. Historically Liverpool have done well in terms of selling tickets for the early rounds, so if they get anywhere

near a sell-out that’s a big share of the gate for us as well.”

The tie will be played in the week starting September 21, with the clubs yet to confirm a date. It seems unlikely the game will be chosen for live TV coverage, with Sky planning to screen Aston Villa v Birmingham and Tottenham v Arsenal.
